What is ration card?

A ration card is a food ration card issued by the government of a country to its citizens, allowing them to purchase food at subsidized prices. The ration card is usually issued to all citizens of the country.

A ration card is an identity card, which means that it holds the information of the person who has issued it. A ration card is issued, mostly by a state government, to all the people who are residing within the state, who are eligible to purchase ration through it. 

One of the main purposes of issue of ration card is to keep a track on the people who consumes ration, and to implement a system of supply and demand. Ration card is also used as a voting card. In today's date ration card is not only used to get cheap ration but it also works as an identity card.

Who can apply for Ration Card as per Tamil Nadu State Government?


According to the Tamil Nadu state government, one should be a citizen of Tamil Nadu to get a ration card. The age of the person applying for the ration card should be 18 years or more. The name of the family members below the age of 18 years will be included in the ration card of their parents. And the same rule applies in other states as well.

How Many Types of Ration Cards are There?

There are three types of ration cards- Above Poverty Line (APL), Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Antyodaya families. Very poor people are kept in the Antyodaya category.

This category is decided on the basis of the annual income of the person. The APL card is issued to those who earn more than the poverty line. The BPL card is issued to those who earn less than the poverty line.

APL Ration Card: (Above Poverty Line) Which is given to the families living above the poverty line (as estimated by the planning commission). Beneficiaries of these cards have to produce proof on the basis of which food grains are issued. These families will get 15 kg of food grains (subject to availability). as per the planning commission.

BPL Ration Cards: (Below Poverty Line) are issued to such families who live below the poverty line as per the norms set by the government. BPL cards have been issued to the beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System. 

However, the criteria to qualify for BPL cards are not only the fact that the person is below the poverty line. The person must also be able to supply a list of all the members in the family, their age, and the number of members in the family. 


The BPL ration card holder is entitled to get 25-35 kg of food grains per month. The quantity of ration may vary from state to state. Along with this, the price of food grains also depends on the state governments. Hence the price of grains per kg may vary from state to state.

Antyodaya Anna Yojana: (AAY) is the flagship scheme of the union government. This scheme is designed for the poorer sections of the society. This scheme is designed for the weaker sections of the society who might not be able to purchase food items from the market.

Under this scheme, every month 35 kg ration which includes 20 kg wheat and 15 kg rice to all the beneficiaries. Beneficiaries can buy wheat at ₹2 per kg and paddy at ₹3 per kg. This scheme is also called Annapurna Yojana. The scheme was launched with an aim to ensure that the poor in the country have a reliable source of food.

How To Apply For Tamil Nadu Ration Card?

To apply for ration card in Tamil Nadu, the consumer has to submit the application form. Firstly, get the application form from the Office of the Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department and fill all the correct information required in the application form. 

Attach all relevant documents with the application form and make the required application fee. Hand over to the office person/operator at the center and get the acceptance slip. The applications are being accepted through the offices of the Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department.
